Baseline Inventory: Nursery Stock and Mushroom Production (Feb 2026)

Introduction

As I begin my first year of Nature Conservation studies, I am establishing a baseline for my current biological assets. This post documents the “Starting Point” for my two main resource streams: my indigenous tree nursery and my mushroom production unit.

1. Nursery Inventory (Vegetation Management)

I am currently managing 10 primary tree specimens. To prepare for the 2027 relocation to Stutterheim, I am implementing a “Light Move” strategy.

• Current Status: All trees are currently in pots to allow for mobility.
• Technique: I am focusing on height reduction and stem trimming to manage energy expenditure before the move.
• Next Steps: In the coming months, I will begin air-layering specific branches to create “1-liter babies,” which will be couriered to the land to reduce truck space and costs.

2. Mushroom Production (Resource Management)

My mushroom business, which serves as the practical application for my studies in Mycology and Resource Administration, is currently operating under a strict 25-day protocol.

• Process: “Fresh for the Experience, Dried for the Scale.”
• Innovation: I am utilizing leftover wood to create grow beds (40cm x 1m) for Garden Giants and herbs, which will eventually be integrated into my outdoor structure.
• Sustainability: All systems are designed to eventually run on a zero-electricity model upon relocation.

Reflection

By documenting these baseline measurements now, I am ensuring that my 2027 Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) portfolio shows a clear, scientifically valid progression of growth and management.
