The Recalcitrant Seed

Posted on April 8, 2026April 8, 2026 by Helen

Mango seeds are classified as recalcitrant, meaning they do not follow the “dormancy” rules of many other seeds.

  • The Science: They cannot be dried out or frozen without losing viability. They must be planted almost immediately after being removed from the fruit.
  • Observation: Today’s footage shows seeds where the radicle (the first root) and plumule (the first shoot) have already emerged. This “naked” embryo stage is the most vulnerable point in the tree’s life cycle.
